First identify what the study actually tested
Read the compound’s exact identity, form and source; the experimental model; the conditions; and the outcome measured. A shared product name is not enough to connect a paper to a different supplier’s material.
| Evidence | Supports | Does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Cell experiment | A response under the tested laboratory conditions. | The same effect in people. |
| Animal study | Findings in that species and design. | Human benefit or a human dosing plan. |
| Human study | Findings in its participants and treatment setting. | Equivalent quality or effects from a different research vial. |
| Batch COA | Findings for a submitted material sample. | Clinical efficacy. |
Ask what else could explain the signal
Look for controls that address the actual question, not just a statement that controls were included. Check whether the authors discuss competing explanations.
Repeated readings are not independent evidence
NIH reporting principles call for enough information to distinguish independent biological data from technical replicates. Sample size, exclusions, randomization and blinding should be described where relevant. NIH: reporting preclinical research.
Read the size of the effect and its uncertainty
A statistically significant difference can still be too small to matter for the research question. Conversely, an uncertain estimate does not establish that no effect exists. Read the effect size, uncertainty, number of independent samples and any limitations—not only a p-value or headline.
Check whether a result was repeated by others and whether the methods and materials are sufficiently described to attempt replication. A review summarizes evidence; it does not replace checking a key original experiment.
Connect material evidence separately
Use the paper to understand the experiment and the batch report to assess supplied material. A matching identity result cannot transfer a paper’s clinical claims to a vial. Likewise, a well-designed study does not authenticate a seller’s stock. Keep those two evidence chains separate when evaluating a product or designing research.
